A Gift for Valentine's Day

Choosing a Valentine’s Day gift can be stressful - not only do you have to decide on a gift, you also have to be aware of what message your gift sends to your recipient. In this way, Valentine’s Day is different from other holidays. The problem arises because, for many, Valentine's Day is the ultimate day to celebrate love and romance, while to others, it's not a big deal.
"How do I choose the right gift for Valentine’s Day?" Before you decide on a gift, especially if you are choosing between a naughty or a nice gift, there are two things you should consider:
  1. Your relationship. What stage is your relationship in? Have you just met, dating for awhile but still getting to know each other, or are you in a long term relationship, married, or perhaps a secret admirer?
  2. Your message to them. What statement you want to make with your choice of gift. Do you want to leave them speechless? Say you are sorry? Do you want to drive them wild? Or do you just want to say, “I'm thinking of you”?
Once you have answered these questions, you are ready to shop.

Valentine’s Day Traditions: Come and Go

Different ways of celebrating Valentine’s Day have emerged through time.  It has created a variety of traditions that are practiced in varying countries. Some have been forgotten, some are not.

The history of card giving in the United States has changed starting from  the Civil War to what is practiced today. There were times when cards contain cruel and rude humor. Although, many cards have patriotic and political designs like images showing lovers, heroes, and generals. Nowadays, Internet have modified the way people give cards—through email. Customized designs for various occasions like Valentine’s Day are available for email messages. There are those with built songs and recorded messages. Some cards are even three-dimensional. Home-made cards are also given especially to lovers and parents.

While the traditions of United States have changed due to changing politics and technology, the Spring Festival of Italy just ceased. Before, this festival is held in the open area where the young would gather in an ornamental garden and listen to music and poetry reading. Couples in the City of Turin also used to announce their engagement on this day. Today, it is just part of an ancient history.

The Festival of Lupercalia in also an ancient tradition. It was held every February 14. A day before the Lupercalia, Roman women would honor Juno, the Queen and goddess of marriage and women in Roman mythology. On the day of the festival, they would write love letters and put it in a large urn. The men would then choose a love letter and pursue the woman who authored the chosen letter.  It is believed that Valentine’s Day originated from this pagan festival.

In Australia, there were extravagant Valentine’s Day celebration. Miners who had newly found gold from the Ballarat mines were willing to spend on expensive and elaborate Valentine’s Day celebration. Australian merchants could send orders worth thousands of pounds. Valentine’s Day cards were made of satin cushion, designed with flowers, colored shells, and perfumed. Sometimes, these cards would even have humming birds or birds of paradise. These things were put in an expensive ornamented box.

There are traditions however that stayed in some countries like Germany and Denmark.

Some German traditions on Valentine’s Day are being practiced until now. The man usually gives flowers to the one they love on February 14. People also give love tokens with lovely messages. Although, this can be done on ordinary day. Generally, people give flowers and chocolates on this day.

In Denmark, the Valentine’s Day card is also known as the lover’s card. A transparent card that is when held up to the light shows a picture of a lover handing gift to his love.

Valentine’s Day in Denmark is celebrated by giving poems and candy snowdrops. Danish people also send funny love notes. These love notes are called gaekkebrev. It also refers to joking letters. On this letter, the sender signs his name in dots and if the receiver guesses correctly, the sender gets a candy egg at Easter time.

Tips For A Successful Valentine's Date

Dating, especially on romantic occasions such as Valentine's Day, is probably one of the most exciting yet daunting adventures any single individual might ever encounter. Traditional dating—meeting up, going out and eating out—with somebody you are interested with can be a challenge as well as a learning experience for everyone.

More than the women, men feel more pressured when going out on a date specially on Valentine's Day because they are expected to do almost everything to make the date a success. Since they are the ones who will carry out most of the so-called “dating tasks” here are some tips that can help men go through with the exciting process of dating the girl they are interested with.

- CLEALINESS. Ensure cleanliness by keeping on eye on your hygiene and style. The worst thing any man can do is to turn up on a date smelling, unshaven, and looking dirty so the first thing you should do is to take a bath, brush your teeth, and shave those stubborn stubbles. Men who do not know how to maintain hygiene are no-nos for the more hygienic sex. So it pays to spray on some decent cologne and gargle before you meet up with your date.

- LOOK NICE. Dress up to look your best. Looking your best when you go out on a Valentine's date gives the idea that you have prepared for the special occasion even if it’s only a first date. If you don’t have enough dough to buy new shoes or clothes, at least try to wear those decent ones to impress your date.

- TIME MATTERS/ The first impression of women is usually based on how much men value their time. If you ask a woman on a date, make sure that you can turn up on time because not doing so will give her the impression that you don’t value your word. If you don’t want your date to think you are unreliable, try be early or at least on time when going out on a date.

- ISSUES ON BILLS. The general rule in dating is that whoever asks for that date should pay for it. Since you are the one who asked for and you are the man, then, by all means, you should pay the bill. But if the idea of your paying for the entire bill does not sit well to the woman you’re dating and she insists paying for her own, make a compromise. Suggest that she pays the half and you’ll pay for the rest.

- BEING A GENTLEMAN PAYS. Simple things that show your gentleness like holding the door open for her, letting her walk through the door first, and pulling out a chair for her will definitely make an impact on her. Showering her compliments throughout the day will also make her think that you appreciate her efforts of looking good for the date.

Remember, people need conform the rules whether they like it or not. In the case of dating specially during Valentine's Day, there's no harm in following these simple rules should to ensure success for both parties.

Choose Gifts Appropriate to Your Relationship

For the New Relationship: You're interested in them, but don't want to be presumptuous. What to do? Consider dropping a hint. Asking what he/she would like for Valentine's Day is a subtle way to let them know that you will be getting something for them. For this relationship, the gifts should be light-hearted – not too sappy as to scare them away. A Cookie Bouquet delivered, a Giant Fortune Cookie with your personalized message inside, dinner & a movie or a DVD are good choices.
For the Long-term Relationship: For this relationship, you have more choices - romantic, sexy and humorous gifts can all be choices. You can afford to have a little fun with this relationship to get your point across. For the more risque gifts, choices include romantic games, chocolate body paint, and lover's coupons. You might even go so far as to learn the art of exotic dancing to please your partner. And for the more traditional, jewelry is always welcomed. If you can't afford rubies, garnets show your love in red splendor and are very affordable.
For the Spouse: Valentine's Day is a real test of how much you want to keep romance alive in your relationship. So be sure to acknowledge one another lest one of you is disappointed. Choose a gift to help rekindle the passion in your relationship such as a trip for the two of you. Can't travel? Then just do something together – an experience gift such as a couples massage, a wine tasting or even sky diving for the more adventurous. And, most important, no kids allowed!
For the Secret Admirer: Valentine's Day is the perfect opportunity to woo the object of your affections by sending anonymous gifts in hopes of a real relationship. Be careful with your choice of gift as not to create fear – you don't want to end up with a restraining order! Keep the sentiments light. And, if you are sending an anonymous gift to someone's office, make it "super-sized" – a bouquet of balloons, a large teddy bear or long stem roses. Remember, with a gift sent to the office, you're not only making a statement to your recipient, but also potentially impressing her/his colleagues – which can score you some points!

Alternative Greeting Cards

No longer do you have to "say it with a card!" Greeting cards remain popular as a way to express sentiments to loved ones. However, there are gifts that serve as alternatives to greeting cards. Cookies can be personalized or actually used to spell out a message for your loved one. Everyday products like soap can be personalized with a message and photo for your recipient. When a greeting card is not enough, gifts like these will be remembered.
Remember, for Valentine's Day, the best present of all is you! As long as the gift you send has meaning, it will be cherished. Valentine’s Day can be anything you want it to be - from romantic to fun. So show a little creativity in your gift-giving and enjoy your special day!

Valentine's Day Shopping Tips for the Men

Guys, beware! Show that you put some thought into your choice of gift. This can make or break a relationship. Your significant other will be looking for a clue as to the message you are sending through your gift. Think romance! To most ladies, Valentine's Day is the day their man acknowledges his affection/love (depending on the stage of your relationship) for her. If this doesn't happen, she could be greatly disappointed.
Don't Do
  • No flowers in plastic sheaths – this has grocery store/procrastination written all over it! If you purchase flowers, present them a vase.
  • Avoid Lingerie unless she has pointed it out. Lingerie for Valentine's Day is never for her, but rather for you. If you do go this route, save her the humiliation of trying it on if it isn't quite right.
  • Be careful not to sabotage her diet with excessive gifts of chocolate.
  • Humorous gag gifts can be great Valentine's Day fun, but don’t go so far as to embarrass your loved one.
  • Clothes is usually not be the best choice, but If you choose to give apparel, do your homework!! Make sure to buy the correct size and style. Don't buy a smaller size as not to offend her – it makes for an awkward situation when it doesn't fit. Also, many ladies have favorite colors and colors they avoid when it comes to clothing, find out her best colors.
  • Avoid the practical. Even if you know she really wants that new kitchen appliance, don't go there for Valentine's Day! Valentine's Day is about celebrating your relationship.
  • Send something! Don't let the day pass you by - if you don't acknowledge her on Valentine's Day, someone else might.
  • Make sure the gift is appropriate for your relationship and is sending the right message.
  • A gift you make yourself customized for your special someone will guarantee success. Test your creativity and create a personalized piece of jewelry.
  • Be yourself! Don't send a mushy gift if that is totally out of character for you. There are many choices for Valentine's Day to suit your gifting style.
  • Shop Now! Procrastination increases your stress level and decreases your creativity. Not a good combination! Waiting until the last minute will increase your chances of sending the wrong message, and that, will get you in trouble every time. You can save valuable time by getting ideas and shopping online.

Tips For Finding A Special Gift

Everyone will agree that it is much more difficult to find a special gift for a person you are close to, no matter what the occasion. In such cases people usually spend hours and hours without luck. It is the same for me, I always need lots and lots of time when I'm looking for a present for someone I love, no matter if it is for a birthday or any other occasion. Just by accident I once found a great special present for my sister.

I was actually very lucky as she is very limited in what she can wear, being allergic to all types of metal jewelry. So that bracelet I found was made of two lines of glass beads and was just in the colors that she likes and wears a lot. It was stretchy so size didn't matter at all and the most important - there was no metal on it at all.

On another shopping trip of mine I luckily came upon a special gift for my godchild. She has always been into the heart shaped things, and what I found was a wide variety of different colors and sizes of hearts shaped out of glass. I also found a heart shaped bow made of glass so I purchased some hearts and the bowl, making a very nice and warming set of crystal hearts.

After a few lucky occasions I realized that it was actually much easier to get those special gifts when they are not the priority and you are not looking for them at all. This made me take the decision and now I am looking at such items all year round.

It is better like this because first there is no pressure and shopping itself becomes much more pleasant and relaxed and second it saves me money, because shopping all year round I often get the sale prices, and even if they are not on sale it is much easier to get a thing each month instead in getting all together in December.

And in case I already managed to convince you that it is better to do it my way, I will give you some advice on how to make it even easier to find a special gift. It is very simple but it helps a lot. Just make a list of all the beloved people you usually buy for and make sure to have it always with you. Any time you find a gift suitable for a person on your list just buy it and cross the name off.

Then when holidays come you just buy for the ones still on the list. It is also a good idea to arrange a place where to store all those, because it already had to buy another present because I could not remember where the one that I bought earlier was. Being sensible and organized in purchasing the presents for you closest people can both help you save money and time finding a special gift, and make holidays much more relaxed and pleasant.

Gift Ideas For Women On Valentine's Day

For most men, picking out the perfect Valentine's gift for their wives or girlfriends can be a tedious task. Since not all women are very particular about what they really want, men spend a lot of time finding that elusive gift and end up confused and frustrated when they can't decide which one to choose for their special someone.

To avoid confusion, you must mentally review the interests of your wife or girlfriend and create her profile in your mind when you go out shopping for that gift.

If your wife or girlfriend is logical and humble, avoid giving her items that extravagant and super expensive. Give your “practical” partner extremely practical gifts that may include a new coffeemaker, vacuum cleaner, magazine subscriptions, furniture items, towels or sheets, and a few gardening items.

If you have the “romantic or feminine” partner, give her sentimental stuff like journals with pen set, perfumes, tickets to the special ballet, art show, or theatre performance, a pampering bath and body set, reservations at a fancy fine-dining restaurant, a relaxing out-of-town or out-of-the-country weekend getaway, jewelry like necklaces and earrings, or a designer watch.

If your partner is into sports or fitness, give her what a “sporty” wife are interested with that may include tickets that feature her favorite basketball, hockey, baseball, football, or soccer team, team spirit items like collectible shirts, hats, and memorabilia, fitness stuff like hand weights, yoga mat, workout DVDs or a pre-paid gym membership.

Romantic gift options for women

Giving her a unique gift on Valentine's Day would definitely rekindle that special bond. If you are still clueless what gift/s you can give your wife or girlfriend, here are the top Valentine's Day items that men usually give out to their partners on this special day.

- A selection of her favorite flower/s. This is surefire hit because women cannot resist the charm of flowers.  Just make sure that the flowers are her favorite variety to create more impact.

- Jewelry and unique accessories with matching jewelry boxes. Women love jewelries so if you can afford it, she would be extremely delighted to have it as a Valentine's Day gift from you.

- A special pencil sketch or a portrait of your wife or girlfriend. This is a unique gift to give her especially to those who are inclined with the arts.

- A personalized CD or audio cassettes of her favorite singer or artist. Women take pride if their men know what their tastes and preferences when it comes to music so this will be a hit.

But before you go out on that gift-buying spree for your Valentine's date, make sure that you stick to your price range. If possible, buy her the thing/s she specifically asked for to avoid hassles. Also, take time to look for gift/s that suit/s her style, taste, and personality and lastly, wear comfortable clothes and shoes so you would be comfortable even if you spend the whole day looking for that special gift.

Perfect Valentine's Day Gift For Men

Valentine's Day is indeed the perfect time to show your love and share your blessings to the people you love. Aside from celebrating love by spending time with loved ones, Valentine's Day has become one of the most anticipated times of the year because it is the time when gift-giving is at its best.

Since men are quite particular to the practicality of their stuff, make sure that you give him items that he can use. Before starting that journey of finding the perfect Valentine's Day present to him, make sure that you take into consideration his personal preferences or inclinations.

When buying for gifts, make sure that you try to canvass online for the items that he might want or take the time to go to the mall or specialty stores and find the best one that you think that would fit him.

Choosing the best among the rest

You must know by now men are notoriously hard to buy for because not every gift will work for every man. This means that shopping out for a Valentine's Day gift for him can be a tedious task. But, gift-hunting for men can be simpler when you consider his activities, hobbies, and interests. If the special man in your life is a:

- Gadget geek. Consider buying him new techy stuff, accessories, and items. A new unit of a handheld mobile, the latest games and software programs, an MP3 or MP4 player, or a laptop will surely find a way to his heart.

- Sportsman, sports enthusiast, or outdoorsman, then consider buying sports-related stuff for him. For the sportsman, purchase something that is related to his favorite sport or something he can use while doing it. For the sports enthusiast, items such as jackets, t-shirts, watches, posters, and other memorabilia that are related to his favorite sports team is a surefire hit. For outdoorsmen, consider practical things he can use while outdoors.

- Chef or is into culinary art. Give him something that he can use while cooking or preparing foods. If he is inclined to the art of cooking, enroll him to cooking class. For men who love to cook, opt for a special array of spices and sauces or a stainless knife set.

- Metrosexual. Take note of his fetishes. Usually, metrosexual men are very particular about their looks and fitness. A new man’s skincare set and products, a new bottle of his favorite cologne, or a spa gift certificate, should do the trick.

- Motor man. Rev up for something that is related to his vehicle. Men who love cars, motors, big bikes, trucks, or muscle cars would definitely appreciate car accessories or gift certificate to maintain their prized-possessions.

If your husband or boyfriend does not belong to this list, try giving him extravagant gifts if your budget would allow like an expensive liquor or wine, a weekend vacation getaway, a yacht cruise, a new car, latest electronic items or a yearlong gym membership. While buying gifts for men, it is important to remember that the gift you are planning to purchase is in line with his interest regardless of the price or the trend.

What to give on Valentine’s Day?

Giving gifts on Valentine’s Day has been a tradition common to many countries. Some say because such occasion has been commercialized. Some believe it to be an important day to show love to loved ones.

Even before, Valentine’s Day is celebrated by giving love letters and later modified to giving flowers and chocolates until anything will do as long as it shows feelings of love. Early Valentine’s Day gifts were actually love letters, flowers, and chocolates. In most traditions, if not all, these conventional gifts have stayed.

Once in history, Valentine’s Day was marked as the second highest time, next to Christmas Day, people bought cards. Exchanging cards every 14th of February has been practiced long ago. The medieval Europeans had a tradition of exchanging love letters because they believed that birds began to mate on February 14. The city of Verona in Italy, where Shakespeare’s famous fictional characters Romeo and Juliet abode, gets around 1,000 letters for Juliet every 14th of February.

From the first Valentine’s Card made commercially in the 19th century, a variety of cards are now available in the market from hand-made and three-dimensional cards to designed electronic messages.

As time changes, celebration of Valentine’s Day has also been modified. Not only people exchange cards, they also start giving love tokens, flowers, chocolates.

Flowers as a gift probably started when Charles II of Sweden brought a Persian poetical art to his country. That art is called “The Language of Flowers.” Then history tells us how flowers have played an important role in people’s lives like passing secret messages with a lily or lilac.

Rose is the most popular flower given on February 14. Through the years, it has been one of the primary symbols of Valentine’s Day. In Roman mythology, it is the favorite flower of Venus, the goddess of love. Aside from love, a rose symbolizes peace and forgiveness too. A yellow rose means friendship and white for peace. A pink rose may mean friendship or romantic relationship. The famous red rose means strong and intense feeling of love. Hence, red roses are mostly seen during Valentine’s Day.

Besides a rose, there is a variety of flowers to choose from. These flowers usually have denoted meaning too. For instance, an Anemone means dying love. A Daisy means innocence. A Lily is purity, Fuchsia is elegance, Poppy is consolation, Snowdrop is hope, Sunflower is warmth feeling, and a red Tulip is a declaration of strong love while yellow means hopeless love.

A chocolate is another famous gift during this day. Some old traditions already include chocolates as Valentine’s Day gifts. Some manufacturers have made heart-shaped chocolates and decorated box of chocolates just for Valentine’s Day.

Cards, flowers, and chocolates are just traditional Valentine’s Day gifts today. Anything can be a gift like the carved wooden lovespoons in Wales. It is decorated either with hearts, keys, or padlocks symbolizing the “unlocking” and “locking” of someone else’s heart. Serving food, especially with aphrodisiac ingredients, can also be a gift. Gadgets are also popular gifts nowadays.

So, on Valentine’s Day, just about anything goes.

How to Enjoy Valentine’s Day with Your Beloved without Emptying Your Pocket

Got honey but not much money? That shouldn’t be a reason not to celebrate Valentine’s Day. February 14 is the day you spend with the most special person in your life, regardless of how cheap or expensive your gifts are or how simple or extravagant your date is. What matters is that you have the time to spend with your loved one on the day of hearts.

If you are on a tight budget, don’t worry. There are many ways you can celebrate V-day without breaking the bank.

1. Give inexpensive yet thoughtful gifts.

Chocolates, flowers, and jewelries are some of the traditional V-day presents. Why don’t you give your sweetheart something that won’t cost you much but would mean a lot to him or her. Homemade cookies, cakes, or cards are economical yet thoughtful presents. Here’s one gift your honey will appreciate without you spending a single penny: offer your “services”—you can run errands for your beloved like washing the car, making a special dinner, repairing the house, or giving a massage.

2. Put your feelings into writing.

Write down your reasons for loving your honey on small pieces of colored paper and then post them all over the house: on the fridge, couch, closets, and anywhere. For sure, your love will be delighted to discover everything you love about him or her.

3. Look for free or low-priced concerts.

An organization, school, or college in your area may be organizing a free concert on February 14, so grab the chance to watch it with your beloved!

4. Have a special, candlelit dinner at home.

Why spend hundreds of dollars for a dinner date at an elegant restaurant when you can dine at home? What makes V-day dinner at home all the more special is the fact that you cook and prepare the dishes yourself for the one you love. Isn’t that sweet and thoughtful? You can even get dressed up for it and arrange the table setting to create an ambience of a fancy restaurant.

5. Be smart when purchasing flowers.

You don’t have to follow the flock by getting a bouquet of red roses. There are other beautiful flowers out there at lower the price of roses. To save more money, you should order your flower several weeks earlier than February 14.

6. Go on an inexpensive yet enjoyable date.

You can take a walk in the park, take a rowboat on a lake, or drive around and explore your neighborhood for some nice places to eat. Or you can stay at home watching your favorite movies on DVD while munching on popcorn.

7. Find reasonably-priced travel deals and accommodations.

Look around for travel deals on the Web. Be on the lookout for discounts before you make a reservation. Also, learn how to negotiate for the deals and prices properly. Who knows, you may be able to get a vacation for two at a lower price!
See? Celebrating Valentine’s Day may seem involve a lot of money, but then you can cut back on your spending while having fun with your sweetheart.

Easy Steps to Make a Valentine’s Day Popup Greeting Card

Next to Christmas cards, Valentine cards are the second most popular greeting cards in the United States, with more than one billion V-day cards sent every year. For sure, you have received tons of the same old Valentine’s Day cards since you-don’t-know-when. And most likely, you have grown tired of them. After all, simple cards may mean that the sender has not made much effort of giving you something more special for the occasion. Even buying and giving plain greeting cards can be boring. Why don’t you spice up the holiday by creating something unique and different like a popup card?

The best thing about making your own popup V-day card is that you can show your creativity and love for the card’s recipient without costing you much. All you need are the following simple materials: paper, pen, ruler, scissors, and printer. And since you make the card on your own, the card would mean so much that the recipient will treasure it for a lifetime.

Follow these four easy steps to be able to create a unique and memorable popup greeting card that you will give to your beloved on February 14.

1. Choose a high-quality paper.

The best places to find the right paper for your popup card are office supplies stores. Some of these stores feature scrapbook items, including paper in packages or individual sheets. Great color choices for V-day cards are pink, red, and cream. It is recommended that you buy a few 20- to 25-pound colored sheets. As for the thick card stock, look for plain white or other color that blends well with that of your chosen thin colored paper.

2. Print your greeting.

On your word processor, create a message that you will use for the popup card. This will make a professional yet personalized touch on your card. Make your message short but sweet. You can go romantic or cutesy, but don’t make your message an epic that’s hard to digest in one glance. When you’re done, print your message.

3. Cut and fold the paper.

Generally, greeting cards are not simply 8.5x11 papers that you fold in half. You will need to trim your card to make it a bit smaller. Next, fold the paper in half, making sure that your printed greeting will fit into the area. Then fold the paper again from the opposite side. Press the edge of the paper using a ruler.

Here’s how to make a heart popup: draw a half heart shape on the outside of the card so that when it’s opened, a full heart shape can be seen on the outer area of the card. Then fold the card and cut carefully through the heart’s edges. But be careful not to cut the entire heart shape. Just leave the edge along the upper part of the card uncut.

Now, open the card. Voila! The heart shape will pop up.
4. Do the finishing touches.

Paste your printed message on the inner part of the card. You can out drawings, stickers, or anything related to Valentine’s Day on the popup card.

For those men they love, women accompany their chocolate gifts with other items such as clothes, neckties, and cufflinks to name a few.
